Founder & Principal Consultant
Epidemiologist | Data Scientist | Public Health Informatician
André van Zyl is a public health professional with more than a decade of experience spanning epidemiology, data science, informatics, and mental health care. He founded Intersect Collaborations LLC to help organizations turn complex public health data into practical, timely insights—especially in resource-constrained or rapidly evolving environments.
Until mid-2025, André served as a Health Scientist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he led global data systems for antimicrobial resistance surveillance and pioneered AI tools that streamlined epidemiologic workflows. While his CDC role ended due to broader federal staffing reductions, the transition has created space to focus on the kind of collaborative, hands-on work he finds most rewarding.
André’s career has included projects across local, state, tribal, and international health systems—from TB research in South African townships to dashboards supporting CDC’s Global AR Lab Network. His work blends technical capability (in R, Python, Databricks, DHIS2, REDCap, and cloud platforms) with an ability to bridge disciplines and communicate across public health, clinical, and tech teams.
In late 2025, André and his family will relocate to rural, Arizona, where he looks forward to contributing locally while continuing to support national and global partners remotely.
He holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Pretoria and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology and Sociology from Nelson Mandela University.
